Tall shrub/small tree grows to about 40'. Very hardy, occurs on wet or dry sites. Even though moderate drought tolerance, and some shade tolerance, it does best in full sun. It is an important component of the shrubfields in the Rocky Mountains which are used by a wide variety of browsing ungulates, including deer, elk, bighorn sheep, moose, and mountain goat.
